The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued a
* Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams in...
Lowndes County in northeast Mississippi...
* until 145 PM CST Thursday
* at 138 PM CST, flooding is occurring along the luxapallia creek
and magby creek. Some homes are flooded in the masonic
subdivision along magby creek. Mason, Sylvan, and Stewart
streets have been inundated by water from magby creek.
Highway 50 is closed between Gardner and lemhburg streets.
Along the luxapallila creek in the Steens area, several
families have been evacuated along Dickerson Road.
Magby creek is nearing its crest along the lower reaches
and should be falling along the upper reaches of the
creek. The lower portions of magby creek should begin to fall
very slowly this evening and then fall more rapidly after midnight.
Luxapallia creek should be cresting in the Steens
area in the next 6 hours. The official forecast point
for the lower luxapallia creek on waterworks Road is not
expected to crest until around noon on Thursday. The
river will crest at 20.4 feet which is 5.4 feet above
flood stage.
Elsewhere in the warning area, other small streams are out of
their banks and could pose problems to those along
these streams.
A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.
