Weather Underground midday recap for Thursday, September 09, 2010.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine kicked up heavy rains over the Lower Mississippi River Valley as it moved northeastward through the nation on Thursday. The system created a strong counter-clockwise flow which pulled ample moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico. Many areas across Arkansas and Oklahoma saw between 1-3 inches of rain, while Harrison, Arkansas reported 4.54 inches. Strong winds also accompanied this system with wind gusts up to 31 mph in Hoyt, Oklahoma.

In the West, wildfires continued to spread, just west of Boulder, Colorado. High pressure over the Four Corners brought sunny skies, hot surface conditions, and strong winds with gusts between 30 to 50 mph. These all combine to create unfavorable fire spread management conditions. Thus far, a total of 3,500 people have evacuated from about 1,000 homes and at least 169 of those homes have been destroyed.

North of this region in the Northern Rockies, a low pressure system developed and strengthened as it started to move into the Northern Plains. This system pushed a warm front into the Dakotas and Upper Midwest, which brought scattered showers and thunderstorms. These storms have not yet turned severe, but Slayton, Minnesota reported 2.11 inches of rain on Thursday.

Elsewhere, a low pressure system in the Northeast slowly pushed offshore and pulled a cold front with it. This allowed for a few clouds to linger over the Northeast and New England, and high pressure built over the Great Lakes and Ohio and Tennessee Valleys.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday have ranged from a morning low of 30 degrees at Silver Bay, Minn. to a midday high of 98 degrees at Dublin, Ga.
