Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Wednesday, May 23, 2012.

Unsettled weather formed across the Northwest and Upper Midwest on Wednesday as a trough of low pressure settled over the northwestern quadrant of the nation. Moisture streaming across the region continued to support areas of light to moderate rain showers from the Pacific Northwest through the Northern Rockies with chances of snow in the higher elevations of the Northern Rockies. Meanwhile, a cold front from the West moved across the Upper Midwest, Central Plains, and Central High Plains this afternoon and brought rain and thunderstorms to areas of Minnesota and the Dakotas. The Storm Prediction Center issued a slight risk of severe weather development statement for areas from the Upper Midwest and Central Plains into northeastern Colorado through the afternoon and evening. While the main concerns with these storms were damaging wind gusts and very large hail, a couple of isolated tornadoes were also possible.

In the Southwest, fire weather danger remained high across the Southwest as above normal temperatures, single digit relative humidity levels, and windy weather conditions persisted in many areas.

In the East, a few showers continued across the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic during the afternoon as a frontal system lingered across the Eastern Seaboard. Meanwhile, heavy rain and strong thunderstorms with gusty winds persisted across the southern tip of Florida. Saturated grounds from the heavy rainfall that occurred yesterday combined with today\'s rainfall resulted in Flood Watches in Miami-Dade County. Additional rainfall accumulations were expected to range from 1 to 2 inches through tonight with locally higher amounts possible in more concentrated bands of rain.

Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:33 PM MDT on May 23, 2012

... Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM MDT this evening...

* event: sustained west to southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts
to 50 mph this evening.

* Timing: winds should begin to slow down around sunset.

* Impact: high winds may make driving difficult for travelers
due to strong cross winds and possible areas of blowing dust
along local roadways. Areas along I-10 from Lordsburg to Las
Cruces... southward through El Paso... and along I-25 south
from Hatch should have greatest impacts.

* Visibility: patches of blowing dust may reduce visibilities to
less than a mile over isolated portions of the deserts
lowlands. Visibilities will begin to improve around sunset.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that winds of 35 mph are expected. Winds
this strong can make driving difficult... especially for high
profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:57 PM MDT on May 23, 2012

Dust is beginning to be carried aloft at this time off playas south
of the international border. Neighboring Dry Lake beds in West
Texas... and across south central New Mexico are starting to become
active source region for dust as well. There are reports already of
local visibilities dropping below 1/4 mile along Highway 180 between
Deming and the turn off to Faywood. Given sustained winds already
near 30 mph... with gusts of 40 mph or more at this time... conditions
like this are expected over much of the area this afternoon and
shortly after sunset. This will especially be the case near small areas
of bare ground... and near east slopes of nearby mountains.
Widespread visibilities could fall to 1 mile or less for a couple
of hours later this afternoon.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... your favorite media outlet or
state transportation authorities for the latest updates on
