Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Wednesday, May 23, 2012.

Unsettled weather formed across the Northwest and Upper Midwest on Wednesday as a trough of low pressure settled over the northwestern quadrant of the nation. Moisture streaming across the region continued to support areas of light to moderate rain showers from the Pacific Northwest through the Northern Rockies with chances of snow in the higher elevations of the Northern Rockies. Meanwhile, a cold front from the West moved across the Upper Midwest, Central Plains, and Central High Plains this afternoon and brought rain and thunderstorms to areas of Minnesota and the Dakotas. The Storm Prediction Center issued a slight risk of severe weather development statement for areas from the Upper Midwest and Central Plains into northeastern Colorado through the afternoon and evening. While the main concerns with these storms were damaging wind gusts and very large hail, a couple of isolated tornadoes were also possible.

In the Southwest, fire weather danger remained high across the Southwest as above normal temperatures, single digit relative humidity levels, and windy weather conditions persisted in many areas.

In the East, a few showers continued across the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic during the afternoon as a frontal system lingered across the Eastern Seaboard. Meanwhile, heavy rain and strong thunderstorms with gusty winds persisted across the southern tip of Florida. Saturated grounds from the heavy rainfall that occurred yesterday combined with today\'s rainfall resulted in Flood Watches in Miami-Dade County. Additional rainfall accumulations were expected to range from 1 to 2 inches through tonight with locally higher amounts possible in more concentrated bands of rain.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 7:15 PM MDT on May 23, 2012

... Smoke from wildfires burning across southwest New Mexico and
northern Mexico will move into West Texas and southeast New
Mexico tonight and Thursday...

Thick smoke is being generated from a large wildfire burning
across southwestern New Mexico. In addition... a number of smaller
fires across northern Mexico will continue to produce smoke.
The winds in the lower and middle portions of the atmosphere will
remain favorable for smoke to move into West Texas and southeast
New Mexico tonight and Thursday. The winds aloft will begin to
change to a more southwesterly direction on Friday and this will
gradually push the smoke plume northward.

While most of the smoke will remain aloft... some of the smoke
could settle during the overnight and morning hours. This could
briefly drop visibilities into the 3 to 5 mile range across the
mountains and adjacent plains of The Trans Pecos region.

For the latest weather information... please visit the National
Weather Service office in Midland can be found on the internet at
/lower case/ http://weather.Gov/Midland

Fire Weather Warning

gusty winds and low humidity for the lower trans Pecos the western
Permian Basin...

* wind... southwest 20 to 25 mph...

* humidity... 5 to 10 percent.

* Impacts... any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Red flag warning -- no fire... avoid the use of open flames or
any activities that may generate Sparks. Accidental ignitions
will have the potential to grow quickly into dangerous wind-
driven wildfires.
